6 months to go and I want to crawl into the cupboard under the stairs.

[Post from Devils Dumplings - Mental Nurse]

I’m in my final 6 months of training and I have been allocated for my management placement a crisis team. I could possibly handle this if it weren’t for the attitude of the acting manager (read as twat) and the fact that I have no child care or support (I am single parent).

My goal is almost within reach now, but I am emotionally and physically exhausted with juggling time/children/work. I have explained my situation to the ‘acting manager’ that I’m struggling to be on time for shifts due to lack of child care, but he is not flexible or willing to negotiate.

Should I pack it all in and buy a velour leisure suit to sit in at the DHSS, or should I get assertive and tell the pot bellied w*nker that I’ll tell my tutor what he says about clients when he puts them on hold?

Have you tried the obvious things ?

Are you a member of a union /professional organisation (RCN).

Making the college well aware of the potential problem ? They may be able to send you on another placement.

As nice as a velour leisure suit may be I hope you find some way to stick with it. Especially after getting this far.

If you have a job lined up could you ask for your management placement there ?

What did you do during previous placements ? Is this a new problem ?

Discuss it with your mentor (at the placement) , are they more sympathetic ? Do they have the power to help.

Good advice MN.
Speak to your mentor but also discuss it with the school of nursing.Trusts like to tout the idea that they are ‘child friendly’ so if discussing it with your union rep. could be useful.
Good luck with your placement.I work in a crisis team so I would be interested in how you get on.

Thank you so much for your comments and advice. I have been in touch with my tutor and also discussed the matter with my mentor ,who are both being very supportive. I have noticed though, that the person who I have the problem with, also is disagreeable with other people too. The whole place is going through a major upheaval so it was never going to be an easy placement. I feel much more positive now that I know my mentor is supporting me, and is flexible if I cannot make it in for the exact time.

Now all i’ve got to do is get those assignments done……………..
