Oldschool Diplomacy

Oldschoolbaby has drawn our attention to an interesting debate here. It demonstrates the unconditional love that nurses and doctors have for each other…….actually its really shocking……(but more shocking is that Oldschoolbaby steps in and quells the riot……I never thought I’d live to see the day!)

EDIT: Sunday 22nd October Oldschool informs me that he had no intention of being an mediator, and has returned to his rightful status in further and more characteristic contibutions to this interesting and rational discussion on Nurse Ratchett’s blog.

My word, what a pile of interesting comments.

May I just say, if I were to ever meet oldschoolbaby I would want to give him a hug.

Of all those comments there were 2, maybe 3 commenters worth listening to (oldschool, obviously being one) the rest were rather pathetic.

I hope I don’t meet Dr’s out there who are really like any of those!

  • I’ve added my own tuppence of thoughts to the feeding-frenzy, which were as follows:

Dear Lord, what a childish display of abuse and counter-abuse from two sets of “professionals”.

Also, I note that the bulk of the most childish and abusive posts have come from doctors.

Yes, the nurse in question has probably gone outside her competence and hence come to an incorrect conclusion (as a 3rd year mental health nursing student, I’ll stick within the boundaries of my competence, and accept the advice of Dr Crippen on this). Even so, the barrage of condescension and insults from some of the doctors hasn’t really shown them in a very good light.

But what do I know? I’m clearly thick as a plank, since I’m not at medical school. Except that before I started nursing I already had a first class degree and a masters, and I’ve never read a copy of Bella in my life. I prefer the Fortean Times, myself.

Even so, this thicko nursie would suggest that Nurse Ratchet be careful in future not to go outside her level of competence, and some of the doctors here try learning some people skills.

    Here endeth the lesson.

Malcolm, I am far too busy studying and learning and working hard and receiving very little money.

Perhaps when I qualify I will start reading bella ;)

  • Rosey! Read the Fortean Times, not Bella!

It’s great. You get to read about aliens and yetis, which are a bit like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, only less weird.

Oldschoolbaby, re: your comments on bullying thought you might like this website

Sorry cant do that thing were you just magically click on the link and it appears. Well i probably can but my geekiness knows its limits.
Anyway it points out a campaign started a week ago on the subject and provides materials.

  • I`m coming home. The hippocratic oath seems to have been replaced by a vow of silence. There were some decent medics in the fray but none of them will break ranks and condemn their peers for their unacceptable slurs. Remember people, respect always, deference never.
Thanks for all your support and thanks for the link Nel.

  • I must say, I’m starting to feel that Nurse Practitioners seem to be becoming scapegoats for anything that goes wrong in the NHS.

That’s not to say that the criticisms by Dr Crippen et al aren’t valid, but just lately on medical blogs it seems that if a patient hasn’t had their incontinence pad changed, it’s because of nurse practitioners. If patients are becoming malnourished in hospital, it’s because of nurse practitioners. If a wall collapses in a hospital, it’s because a nurse practitioner leaned against it too hard (must be all the bourbons they eat on the training courses). It’s never because of NHS budget deficits, bad teamworking or inadequate management support.

I don’t suppose anyone has noticed the rather obvious fact that there’s nothing to indicate that Nurse Ratchet is a nurse practitioner rather than a common-or-garden nurse?
