The workers were assured their terms of employment would be upheld when the not-for-profit Fremantle Trust took control of Barnet Council’s care homes five years ago.
However, this year they were given the choice between signing new contracts or being sacked.
Under the terms of the contract, which came into force on 1 April, their wages and pensions have been slashed by up to 30%, their hours increased and sick pay and holiday entitlement reduced.
UNISON says: -
Care workers need to be properly trained, decently paid and most importantly, valued members of society. This is an all too familiar story of privatisation, where companies pledge to keep delivering the same service but undercut the in-house provision by attacking the conditions of the workforce.
We are asking for the widest possible support for the Fremantle workers. It’s not just about pay and conditions - it’s about dignity and respect.

The company has threatened to sue Labourstart, a trade unionist website organising the campaign, with libel after they were flooded with messages of support and protest about their disgusting treatment of these vital workers. So let’s flood them with even more messages!
