You snivelling little worm. So you went and finished your nursing studies, did you? Well, you may have spent the last three years trying to live off £6000 a year, and as a result be about £8000 in debt, and you may be still waiting for your first month’s pay, but we’re still going to have our wicked way with you.
We want £76 off you. Just for the right to be able to call yourself “nurse”. Yep, 76 quid. Just make the cheque out to “My New Overlords and Masters, The Nursing and Midwifery Council”. While we’re at it, can you also bend over and drop your trousers so we can get some “executive relief” in your cornhole?
Yours Sincerely
The Nursing and Midwifery Council
PS You are now our bitch. And you will be forever. Well, at least until we decide to strike you off.

I say Zed, that letter looks incredibly censored. I do believe the original letter was far more rude, stern and filled with expletives.
Bitter much?! :-p

Grim, isn’t it.
You turn up to work, yet you have to pay them.
If it’s any consolation (and I know it won’t be) the General Medical Council, Medical Defense Union and Royal College of Psychiatrists collectively nick the best bit of £130 from me.
Every single month.
I’m sure I’m single handedly stocking some very fine wine cellars . . .

Does anyone know how to claim back tax relief on this yearly theft? I’m told it can be done, but gave up trying to find out after going round in futile circles.

I think the RCN might be able to help you out with that, Olanzapine.

Hmm. But I am with Unison, Zarathustra, and they were no help on this matter.

“Well, at least until we decide to strike you off.”
…Which might not be all that long if they get to read this!

I’m just filling in the giro slip, stuffing it into the pre-addressed envelope…
“Please affix stamp here”
HOLY MOTHER OF CTHULHU! THEY’VE JUST TAKEN 76 QUID OFF ME AND THEY STILL WANT ME TO PAY FOR THE STAMP?????
Nice, given that I have a starting salary well below that of a social worker, teacher, firefighter, police officer…

Our local trust is paying nurses as nursing assistants if they do not have their PIN Card. Despite the fact it explicitly states it is not proof of registration.
What do you get for your £130 per month Shrink ? Do you get a nasty little bit of slightly thicker than average paper with a number on it, as well as a very boring magazine every few months ?

They do that at my trust too, although they backdate the difference when your PIN comes through.

My £130 gets me :
- GMR Registration. An A5 paper certificate allowing me to keep working as a doctor for 12 more months. I also get letters from the GMC (that always provoke a mind numbing ball crunching terror to see, even though I know it’ll just be the latest guidance on Blah)
- Medical Defense Union cover which I don’t truly need since I do no private work and Crown indemnity covers my NHS work. Still, notionally they’ll defend my corner to protect my reputation rather than settle if Bad Things were to happen. They post the odd magazine about how not writing everything out in laboroius detail in triplicate whilst all clinical contact is witnessed by a chaperone lands someone in bother so we’d better be really defensive all the time just in case
- The Royal College of Psychiatrists pick my pockets to post me a magazine and to let me add MRCPsych after my name, which I never do, even on all my clinic letters etc. Ho hum!
In fact on reflection it’s only my past GP training that’s registered with the GMC that isn’t costing me anything each year. GPs have it so easy

Olanzapine.
The RCN gave me a form that I have to return to the tax office. You should also be able to claim tax relief on your union dues, and on, interestingly enough, the cost of laundering your uniform. Since the “uniform” of the average RMN is a pair of faded corduroys and a button-down shirt from Primark, I found this vaguely amusing. But then I’m easily amused.
If Unison aren’t being helpful, try contacting your local tax office to see what they have to say.

Interesting list of “benefits”. As a Royal College of Nursing steward, I get a free weekly copy of the Nursing Lack-of-Standards sent to me. Half the time I don’t read it since (a) the Nursing Standard is rubbish and (b) I don’t have time. However, it does give me something to line the cat litter tray with.

I don’t know if this will be relevant at all nowadays but a few (10-15) years ago I went on a moral crusade (translates as a diva-like hissy fit) about this issue to the inland revenue. At the end of my journey I was informed by a grinning bureaucrat that to avoid lots of individuals squabbling and filling in forms, the nursing unions had settled nationally for an agreed tax allowance of £25 per nurse. I was also informed (in a menacing tone) that chasing claims can work both ways and some individuals who pursued tax relief often found that they were actually liable to pay more tax than they currently did! I half expected to find a horses head in my bed the next day.

Followed up by a visit from DEFRA to check if you had the correct paperwork to keep horse heads in your bed!
