Dr Crippen and the Gallowgate Scandal

A little over a week, the great Doc Crippen pleasured us with this guest post.

Within the commentary of this discourse, I believe it was firmly and established that this offer of…

I will bet you all a virtual pint that more than 75% of newly qualified nurses are under 25.

…was irrefutably and evidentially proven to be in err by Gallowgate and seconded by Zarathustra with this:

Gallowgate said…

According to the now defunct NMAS (Nursing and Midwifery Admissions Service) website: In 2007, 15226 of accepted applicants were 25 and under and 10260 were 26 and over.

It matters not a jot. Doctors, nurses, all ages, all shafted.
Do I win the virtual pint?

So, by my maths that’s 59.7% who were 25 or under, well short of Dr C’s 75% claimed (and that’s 25 or under when they’re accepted for training, not when they qualify as nurses). I think gallowgate deserves the virtual pint.

Though this bit…

It matters not a jot. Doctors, nurses, all ages, all shafted.

…is sadly true.

However, despite this being proven, and the substantiated claims being laid to Doc C in order we might have our pint - he has thus far failed to deliver.

What a mendacious reneging welching bastard (..err.. of a suggestion).

Actually, E, I think you might be wrong on this point ?

I seem to recall Dr Crippen censoring a similar link [in the comments thread] because of the unpalatable nature of the far right organisation it linked to - the reason I still remember it was because one of the commentators drew attention to Hitchen’s ‘Freedom of Speech’ item, [on YouTube] which I was cheeky enough to highlight again following on from our full, and frank discussion about [whispers] the BNP.

My own view is that if you want a society in which petty bureaucrats can decide which nursery rhymes our children can sing [at least while they are in school] - then vote for the censors.

Same with movies - it has taken 30 years for ‘The Life of Brian’ to screened in certain public cinemas in Wales.

An alternative approach to limiting freedom of speech on the Net [in the context of our present discussion] might have been to issue a statement to the effect that the views of the organisation mentioned in the link are not endorsed by the site moderators BUT [and this is the critical part] it is up to the discretion of the readership to decide for themselves if they choose to follow a [legal] link supplied in the thread.

I have no doubt that censorship, in most cases, is a form of unnecessary repression - typified by a self selecting group deciding, for example, that ba-ba-black sheep can no longer be sung in certain parts of Islington.

I find the idea of local officials debating such issues [behind closed doors] absolutely infuriating [and part and parcel of the bansturbation mind set] but I realise I have now morphed into Mr Angry from Tunbridge Wells.

Yes, censorship is a pointless and masochistic form of self loathing but more importantly it will do absolutely squat to make the world a better place.

Hi,

new poster to this site (any discussion forum about my work, at that) (currently AOT CPN)

I have been reading this site on and off for a while now (6 months). When I worked in a PICU setting, or indeed the open acute ward, if 2 patients started fighting, my job (as I saw it, and still see it) was to stop them fighting and calm the situation down, not debate their right to fight - with them or my collegues.

Although I know how frustrating it is to be told ‘NO’ in a clear way, I think it is important to try and remember why the person is saying ‘no’.

Will

PS I am very aware that none of you who post regularly know me or anything about me, and that my thoughs are probably unwelcome. But I like this site and have enjoyed reading some of the ideas that come from it.

Hi Wobwill, welcome to the site.

I like the idea of a virtual pint, but not as much as I like the idea of a real one.

I think you’ll find shouting “Job Centre” is equally effective.
