Numpties and Muppets Council

It’s that time of year again. The Nursing and Midwifery Council want 76 quid off me to maintain my registration as a nurse. 76 bastard quid. All to be paid in one lump sum. No options for paying by monthly instalments. Ouch.

Just for comparison purposes, if you’re a social worker the General Social Care Council will only charge you 30 quid a year.

Still, I guess I can’t complain about lack of value of money. After all, the NMC do send me a deeply boring magazine every once in a while, and the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence says such nice things about them.

CHRE Chief Executive Harry Cayton said: “We have serious concerns about the inadequate operation of the NMC’s fitness to practice processes, governance framework and lack of strategic leadership, the inconsistent availability and provision of information to council to ensure effective planning and decision making and its ability as an organisation to retain the confidence of key stakeholders.”

Seventy bastard six bastard quid.

  • I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that they are bringing in a new combined register that will replace the CRB check, and that every employee will have to pay (think it was around £60?) to have the new check done. Or did I hallucinate that? Either way, it’s appalling that you have to pay in order to be able to do your job.

The GSCC don’t send us a glossy magazine though… Seriously though, that’s a lot. I’m surprised employers don’t pay. We get our money back for registration from the local authority (as do the occupational therapists that work for the local authority for their registration).

  • You even get that 30 quid refunded? Grrr. I so should have become a social worker.

Last time I made a post slagging off the NMC, we got an anonymous tip-off that the NMC themselves had read the post in question. So, if the NMC are reading this…YOUR BREATH SMELLS LIKE COW POO AND YOUR MOTHER WAS A SIBERIAN YAK!!!!!

I would also like to state that I’ve slept with the NMC’s wife.

  • Me too. And I’m a patient. Did she make that funny little mewing sound and start chewing your ear lobe as she come?

  • Yes, she did. And she whispered in my ear, “You’re much better in bed than the NMC.”

Your fees are tax deductible, and I think we get £38 a year towards them for the next 3 years. It is however, a disgrace how much ‘work’ tax we have to pay.

Some trusts do refund part of the fees, it’s worth ringing your HR department, supposedly my trust sent out letters advising all staff of this but it’s incredible how many people didn’t get the letters, must be the royal mail :-)

  • I think it’s great that we shell out all this money to the NMC and yet the CRHE finds it’s failing in all its key purposes. Such a nice warm feeling!

  • Indeed. I feel a surge of pride as I write out my card details on the payment slip.

Well, I feel a surge of something

  • I’ll be getting to pay that soon, long before I actually earn any money. I share your surge there Z!
