Congratulations to this year’s winners of the Ig Nobel Awards, which gives out prizes for unusual scientific research. In particular, I’d like to congratulate the winners of this year’s Medicine Award, which goes to the following research paper.
“Commercial Features of Placebo and Therapeutic Efficacy,” Rebecca L. Waber; Baba Shiv; Ziv Carmon; Dan Ariely, Journal of the American Medical Association, March 5, 2008; 299: 1016-1017.
This paper demonstrates that a placebo effect becomes enhanced if a patient is told that the placebo in question is expensive.
Any suggestion that the manufacturers of Abilify (aka Aripiprazole) have been reading this research would be pure speculation on my part.

So, now I know to keep armadilos away from string.
OT but imporatant:
Mandy’s got a media appearance coming up and I reckon we all should support her as members of the MH blogosphere

What say you?

Ha! I was disussing the very issue with a colleague yesterday.
This is just an anecdotal impression, but whenever I’ve worked with a patient who’s experienced a catastrophic relapse in psychotic symptoms just after changing to a different medication, it nearly always seems to be aripiprazole that they’ve been changed onto, which doesn’t inspire much confidence in a pill that costs £101.63 for a packet of 28.
Depends on how long the crossover is, it has no use until it is at therapeutic levels in 4 – 6 weeks. Withdraw the old antipsychotic too soon and there is no cover.
I have never worked with anyone on Aripiprazole that it has had any positive effect for them. Yet it is seen as the drug of choic, particularly for people who have had weight isues with Risperidone or Olanzapine. Methinks this is all down to aggressive marketing, then again I could just be a cynical b***h.
Thanks for reporting on the Ig Nobel. Great minds think alike as I spotted the talent in March in my blog post More Expensive Placebos Bring Relief

Maybe it will end up like the other wonder drug next generation antipsychotic (it begins with a “q”) where it is now being marketed for it’s anxiolytic properties…….
I’ve seen one case where it’s worked really well. Not much of an advert though, is it?
