Take that, E!

We’ve previously considered the important question, “Is nursing research a load of old wibble?” Now it looks like the authors of this year’s Research Assessment Excercise don’t seem to think so.

Prof Maggie Pearson, who chaired the main panel that oversaw nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and allied health professions, says the result is a genuine reflection of the strength of research in the area.

“Nursing research has finally matured. We saw some stunning research – real theory-setting stuff,” she says.”It just shows that when you get the targeted funding, it does make a difference.

“There’s some incredible quality there, which is great when you consider the enhanced role that nurses now have.”

Prof Kader Parahoo, director of the Institute of Nursing Research at Ulster University, 80% of whose work was judged to be either internationally excellent or world-leading, says the result will increase the standing of nursing as an academic subject.

Interesting.

  • Yay for the nurse researchers! Of course, they should really be manning the bedpans and making sure all the counterpanes are turned down correctly, but it’s nice to see the ladies getting a pat on their pretty little heads, isn’t it?

Oooof kapowee thonk zap!!!!! Holy bed pans Beakie boy wonder, the Jokers back with his crap arguments, take this Zee……

An RAE report has found Nursing and midwifery to be among the subjects with the most highly rated research.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/educ.....e-research

“But hold on Beakie boy wonder who or what is the RAE?”

“Is it that evil Joker setting out to prove that one & one & one & one & one & one & one & one & one & one & one & one equal er.. hang on Bat E I’ve lost count”

“See I told you Beakie boy wonder you couldn’t count now attend for it is 18 hundred hours and way past you bed time”

“What time is that Bat E my watch only goes up to 12?”

The RAE or The Research Assessment Exercise was conducted jointly by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DEL).

And who or what is the HEFCE ?

“Working in partnership, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) promotes and funds high-quality, cost-effective teaching and research, meeting the diverse needs of students, the economy and society.”

Another way of putting it would be that The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) is a non-departmental public body of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (previously the Department for Education and Skills) in the United Kingdom, it has been responsible for the distribution of funding to Universities and Colleges of Higher and Further Education in England since 1992

In other words it’s a Quango. A Government Quango (Yes I know QUANGO means Quasi autonomous non governmental organization, but the emphasis here I think is on Quasi, i.e. not at all)

Nursing was deemed to be an emerging research discipline by the HFCE and became one of seven disciplines to get “capability-building” funding.

And what of the Prof Maggie Pearson, who chaired the main panel that oversaw the RAE report?

Professor Pearson was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Keele University until September 2007, prior to that she Regional Director of Research and Development for the NHS in the North West. She is also a qualified nurse, with an academic background in the social sciences and a specific focus on health issues.

So what at the end can we say about the RAE report that proudly trumpets that nursing research can now take its place on the world stage?

A government Quango sponsored report, chaired by a nurse academic, has not surprisingly concluded that nursing research is now to be taken seriously and has “come of age after receiving shed loads of money for “capacity building”, and all this from the same organization that sponsored the report in the first place. Fancy!!!

But not to worry “All the investment is beginning to pay off,” says Prof Hugh McKenna, chair of the NMC nursing and midwifery panel. Just as well really after spending all that money it would be a shame if the conclusion was that nursing research was just as crap as it has always been.

“The only thing we can really draw from this report my little snuffle nosed boy wonder is that when you want a report to say what you want it to say you need to choose carefully who you get write it in the first place.”

“Gadzookes Bat E you gone and done it again, well if that just doesn’t about take the biscuit”

  • And you can always rely on E to piss all over any achievement anyone’s made, from a totally uninformed position of supreme ignorance of course. Nice one E. Go and have biccies with big doctor men, maybe they’ll let you touch a prescription pad or even kiss the hem of their garments
