Does mental illness exist (4)

As some of you may have guessed by now I am currently reading a book on “Social construction” or social constructivism or constructionism by Ian Hacking called the “Social Construction of What?”. At the risk of boring certain members of the audience even further (audience what audience?). I want to give a resume [...]

Society is dead: Long live society

An epitaph for the eighties? “There is no such thing as society”
“I think we’ve been through a period where too many people have been given to understand that if they have a problem, it’s the government’s job to cope with it.’I have a problem, I’ll get a grant.’ ‘I’m homeless, the government must house me.’ [...]

Self awareness or self doubt?

I thought it was well past due that I write a post for Mental Nurse, what will all the intellectual discussions going on, it was about time for a pile of waffle from myself. *ahem*
As you may or may not be aware, I am in my final year as a student and will be a [...]

Mad or bad? (Take #37)

Mr Man’s Wife raises discussion on the “Austrian cellar man”
Stories such as this one infuriate me. Once again we have a lawyer who is paid far too much money to try to find a way of reducing the punishment of a man who has undeniably committed a heinous crime, and the best he can come [...]

New Government Targets driven by new research evidence

In healthcare and government leadership, responsibility and direction has more or less been driven by the need for a healthier nation. For the larger part this means ensuring living for a long time.
So it is somewhat shocking and revealing to find this article that provides a new and significant departure from what might be considered [...]

Bloody students

Student nurses are dropping out of their courses at a great rate. In some places, the attrition rate is as high as 56%. So the inevitable question is - why?
Dr Crippen reckons he’s got the answer, in the form of an email from a “soon to be ex-student”, allegedly, complaining about the nature [...]

THE NMC TO SCRAP MENTAL HEALTH NURSE TRAINING!!!

Ok, that was a slight exaggeration, adding a bit of sensationalism, but the above point may come true in the future.
The NMC are currently running a review of pre-registration nursing education.
Questions include:
should nurses be prepared to diploma or degree level?
what proportion of a pre-registration programme should be spent learning in practice?
should shared learning be a [...]

Look after yourself… pass it on

Last week or so I recall writing, along with others, about how people should take responsibility for their physical wellbeing to access healthcare.
I now realise that this was the real agenda for us staying fit and healthy.

Sorry mate, you took that risk.

“Smokers or people who are chronically overweight may have to agree to exercise or to other changes in their lifestyles in return for NHS treatment, as part of the move.”
As already pointed out in the “Smoking bans” debate, the NHS looks set to begin to tell us how to live our life, or no medical [...]

Don’t panic Mr Manwaring…

When I trained as a nurse, I recall the ongoing debate of the ‘theory/practice gap’. In the advent of the Health & Safety turbo-charged steamroller (recently convereted here to run on “Duty of Care” fuel), over the last 20 years or so, I would like to declare the “panic/common-sense gap” our new clear winner.I know [...]

Statistical Abuse?

It’s a good thing we keep so many mentally ill in hospital - just think how high the Mind report for community abuse figures would be if we didn’t?
(That was sarcasm, just in case you missed it)
I’m not against the sentiments of the Mind report, I consider many people with mental illness to have [...]

Linksplurge

July 11, 2007:
Your news update from psychminded
…..
Aiming high
- A new scheme hopes to boost standards in psychiatric wards. Adam James investigates.
But will you be able to choose to go to a four star ward when sectioned ? Well … Difficult to implement with the slash and burn approach to mental health budgets by the Trusts.

Mental Illness: Two: People Are Strange

A follow up to Mental Illness: One. As before this post is not a thorough research based article. It is a mix of personal experience, discussions, made up things, fleeting thoughts and stuff I will just put in to wind people up.
To summarise my previous articles. Mental Illness exists, if for no other reason than [...]

A Letter From The Future

Dear Mental,
You might be quite surprised to be receiving a letter from yourself. I remember that I was.Or do I ? Do you remember that Italian patient, Chris Agliostro ? Said he was immortal. Well that turned out not to be the case. But it turned out his claim of having invented a time machine [...]

Your Mother Is Hiding In The Wardrobe

Nurses sometimes tell lies. This is a shocking admission. Lies to patients are bad. Almost always. Lies to families can be different. Not so much out and out lies, more massages of the truth. In adult mental health we tend to be guided by what the patient wants shared. If anything. In older persons nursing [...]
