However, I am also applying for a 2yr accelerated course as i’ve already got a BSc in Psychology.

Oooh no no no, to get in to nursing you just do 3 weekends training, don’t you? 8)

Hope it all works out for you, it’s a time of change (and thus opportunity) so an interesting time to step in to mental health nursing!

I’ve written longer about less!

Just comparing your pathway to mine - where I didn’t do psychology; only RMN - I wish I’d done it the way you have.
You’re right to think of getting the experience before trying to teach - and probably right about the clinical psych not giving you enough challenge - but I would recommend it - even after you complete your MH nursing. Nowadays opinion-based psychiatry has drifted towards objective-psychology and I’ve found that I’ve reached a certain limitation in applying my clinical skills because I don’t have the right academic background and my opinion lacks that presumed credibility associated with a medical or psychology degree/masters/doctorate.
I see the eclectic MH nursing role as perhaps needing to develop this way too in order to sustain itself as a lead body - as, contrary to some web-doctor opinions - we’re not bedpan washers.

Keep us updated on your progress.

Thanks Mr Ian! I’m not really sure how the interview went. Everything (the numercy/reading comp tests and group discussion) went well right up until the one on one interview. I think I got a tad too nervous and made an idiot of myself. But hopefully they will see through the overly wobbly voice and take note of the answers I gave…

To answer your question….Clinical psych is one of the first things to enter my mind towards the end of my course as the next step forward. I had the opportunities to apply for masters courses and even had a couple of phd ideas thrown my way. I do realise that work experience in the field would have also come with these pathways. However, i didn’t feel (and was informed) that they would be as intensive as I would have liked. I learn better when I am “out there and doing it” and therefore a more vocational course is what I feel I am suited to the best. Some will say that I probably made a mistake doing the BSc Psychology in the first place then, as you can go straight into MH nursing from college. Now, I am inclined to agree and wish that I had have done that. However, at the time of finishing my A Levels I have a very different vision of where I wanted to be upon finishing uni the first time round, and felt that Psychology would have worked best for me.

Eventually, my goal is to be a HE lecturer (I worked as a teaching assistant at my old university once i’d graduated and got a taste for it). However, I am in no real hurry to get there…I do want to continue my education though as I don’t feel I am quite done yet. However, I also want to gain some real experience in my chosen field (something I don’t have a substantial amount of at the moment), and get something out of it at the end. I guess that’s why I chose to go down the nursing route. I want to be in the thick of it rather than sit in a room for another x amount of years getting stressed out over a thesis.

That was a tad longer than I expected, sorry. Hehe

Welcome scattydove.

Good luck with the interview/hope it went well.

I suppose my only comment would be more a question -

I’m curious why you wouldn’t take clinical psychology and opted for nursing? Is there a master plan?

Hi everyone

I don’t really need any help as such (or maybe I do with deciding that I want to get into MH nursing haw haw). I just thought i’d introduce myself a little, and say that this has been a really useful source of information for all things related to MH Nursing. I have my first interview tomorrow for a place on a 3yr diploma course. However, I am also applying for a 2yr accelerated course as i’ve already got a BSc in Psychology. Obviously I am really gunning for the two year course but figured all interview practice is good practice.

So…yeees. Just thought I’d say hello and look forward to taking part in the forum a bit more over the coming years as I start my training :) I suppose if anyone does have any general advice…anything at all that they’d like to offer, it is all welcome!

(PS. If this should be placed in a section more appropriate then I will move it :) )

Hi I was in the same possition ayear ago. They know who they are looking for. It was the worst interview I had ever given, but I got the job.

They basically want to know what you have to offer. Give you an idea of the job which sounds scary. And you have to sell yourself. Give an idea on how you would deal with different situations, someone being highly depressed. If you saw someone having ago at someone else, how you would cope in a volatile situation.

Staff are very helpful where i work and they don`t mind what you ask know matter how daft it sounds.

good luck
